Remote learning and Gifted Education

Many of us in NSW have been suddenly thrown into stricter lockdowns and remote learning once again but we need to remember that there is so much opportunity to extend and challenge our gifted students when they are learning from home as it can be more self directed, higher challenge and much more opportunity to research new ideas in depth.

We cannot just send home learning packs that are one size fits all as we have done this before.

We cannot just assume busy work will suit all families and children.

We need to remember gifted students need more challenge and stimulation so by giving them higher order question stems, projects or options to direct their own learning – they will thrive!

So what should you be doing?

  1. Make a class schedule BUT change the questions & activities so that your bright and gifted students are challenged.
  2. Give students options to create their own learning projects – you’ll be amazed at what they can come up with if you give them parameters with choice.
  3. Check in and encourage great ideas and thinking – this is a great time to really encourage your gifted students & boost their self belief.
  4. Check out Bloom’s taxonomy stems, kaplan model of thinking & GRASPS tasks – all great ways to make slight tweaks to your program – it won’t take up too much of your time & your setudents (and their parents) will really appreciate it.
